LAS CRUCES, NM — Former Doña Ana County Magistrate Judge Joel Cano and his wife, Nancy Cano, were arrested by federal agents on April 24, 2025, for allegedly harboring an undocumented immigrant suspected to be a member of the Venezuelan gang Tren de Aragua.

The individual in question, Cristhian Ortega-Lopez, was reportedly residing in the Canos’ guesthouse after being hired as a handyman. Authorities allege that Ortega-Lopez entered the U.S. illegally in December 2023 and was released with a notice to appear in immigration court.
Investigations uncovered evidence linking Ortega-Lopez to Tren de Aragua, including gang-related tattoos, clothing, and social media posts. Additionally, firearms associated with Ortega-Lopez were seized during a raid at the home of the Canos’ daughter.
Judge Cano resigned from his position in March 2025, prior to the arrests, and has since been permanently barred from holding any judicial office in New Mexico.
Both Joel and Nancy Cano face charges related to tampering with evidence. Ortega-Lopez faces federal firearms charges as an illegal alien, with potential penalties of up to 15 years in prison.
