In a solemn moment for the Roman Catholic Church and its 1.3 billion followers, Pope Francis, the 266th pontiff, died at the age of 88 in Vatican City. His passing occurred on Easter Monday, marking the end of a historic and transformative papacy that spanned over a decade.

Jorge Mario Bergoglio, born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, made history when he was elected pope in March 2013, becoming the first Latin American pope, the first Jesuit pope, and the first non-European pope in over 1,200 years. His leadership brought a wave of humility, compassion, and reform to the Vatican and the global Church.
A Legacy Rooted in Service
Throughout his papacy, Pope Francis championed the poor, the marginalized, and the environment. He was known for his hands-on leadership style, often opting for modesty over formality. From washing the feet of prisoners to living in a modest guesthouse rather than the Apostolic Palace, Francis embodied his belief in servant leadership.
His emphasis on mercy over judgment, particularly regarding issues like divorce, LGBTQ+ Catholics, and non-traditional families, challenged long-standing norms and made the Church more approachable to millions.
A Voice for Justice and Peace
Pope Francis was an outspoken critic of economic inequality, environmental destruction, and global indifference. He called on world leaders to act on climate change, advocated for the rights of migrants and refugees, and consistently urged dialogue over conflict.
His encyclicals, especially Laudato Si’, positioned the Catholic Church as a moral leader in the global discussion on the environment and social justice.
Final Days and Global Mourning
Despite recent health challenges, Pope Francis continued his duties until his final days, delivering his last Easter blessing on April 20, just one day before his passing.
Following his death, the Vatican enters a traditional nine-day mourning period known as “Novemdiales”, during which cardinals from around the world will gather in Rome to prepare for a conclave to elect the next pope. The conclave is expected to begin in early May.
